Project Description

Project Description

Traditional wrestling is an important element of traditional sports for many European countries, especially so in the Balkans.
Nevertheless, traditional wrestling remains outside the social dialogue and its appeal is diminishing among younger audiences, thus rendering the sport practice an endangered part of Europe’s intangible heritage.
Project TRAWECU addresses this gap using the heritage of wrestling as a vehicle to firstly attract a new audience to traditional wrestling, while also showcasing that this heritage can be used for the development of the respective local communities through the increase of cultural tourism.
Project TRAWECU is a derivative of previous projects implemented by members of the consortium, both in the framework of Erasmus+ as well as private crossborder initiatives. It emerged as a natural evolution of previous steps implemented in each local community for the promotion of traditional wrestling, especially among youth. Its difference and innovative approach is that it goes one step further in introducing the element of using TSG as a means for cultural tourism development, through the creation of new synergies and partnerships.
Through this project, the consortium aims to introduce traditional wrestling to a wider audience, and use it as part of a greater dialogue on celebration of intangible heritage, local development and sustainable tourism.
TRAWECU’s consortium consists of a mix of partners ranging from Wrestling Clubs, International Organizations, National bodies and Academic institutions.
The project started on 1/1/2021 and concludes on 30/6/2022.
